Recession tips: Going back to school during recession?

Returning to school during the current recession is an option considered by many. Many
career counselors encourage recently laid-off employees to go back to school. Additional
training and education is always valued and is likely to become even more valuable in the
coming years. Here is a list of some of the cons and pros of going back to school during
the current recession.

Cons of going back to school during the current recession:

  • Graduate school applicants are likely to face stronger competition during the ongoing
recession. Many people consider attending school during recession. This of course
increases the number of applicants with diverse and strong credentials. Graduate
school applications are higher this year almost all across the board, from
professional schools to regular graduate degrees. Therefore, prospective applicants
should consider the benefits of going to school now, at the risk of going to a lower
tier school, versus waiting a few years with the possibility of attending a better
    school.

  • Given the financial crisis and the ongoing recession, financing may not be as easy as
    it used to be.

  • Make sure you do not go to graduate school simply out of fear or frustration for not
being able to find a job during the recession. Graduate programs require serious
commitment and often move you life in a new a direction. Make sure you have
thought this throughly before going back to school.

Pros of going back to school during the current recession:

  • Graduate degrees usually significantly add to one’s resume, opening new doors and
opportunities. And this is particularly the case during the ongoing recession, given
the higher level of competition for available positions.

  • Attending graduate school typically helps expand network of professional contacts
that may be very useful in accommodating one’s career path, which is particularly
    helpful during the ongoing recession.

  • The ongoing recession is projected to last for another year or even two at the very
least. Given the downturn in business activities in recession, this may not be a bad
time to take some time off and add to your education and skill levels.

Finally as always, talk to objective professional advisors.
