Recession tips: Home insurance
Given the ongoing recession, it’s more important than ever to be a smart shopper and that
applies to buying your home insurance as well. Here are some of the things you might want
to consider before looking for home insurance during the recession:
1. Insurance companies considers many factors in determining your rate, including your
age, sex, job, marital status, and neighborhood you live in among other things. But if you
shop around, you will soon find out that insurers give different rates for the same set of
risks, and that means you can save a lot by casting a wide net and looking for the right
insurance company for you. Check both local and national insurance providers, you never
know which one offers a better coverage and rate for your home.
2. Remember that there are many types of coverages out there. Many households now use
the HO-3 policies, which provides general insurance for all major risks and perils, except
flood, earthquake, war, and nuclear accident. But there are other kinds of coverages out
there, and depending on your situation, you may want to consider them.
3. Remember that home insurers may cover a home's contents up to between 50-75 % of
the home's value. That means you should always have a list of your stuff and update it
regularly. Taking pictures of your most valuable items may also be a good idea in case you
have to prove.
4. As always, read the fine prints on insurance coverages very carefully and try to
understand all your coverages. For instance, see if your home insurance has inflation guard
(adjusts for inflation), ordinance-and-law coverage (it basically covers the costs of
becoming compliant with building codes), limits, umbrella coverages (additional coverage
over regular liability limits), flood, displacement (provides for living expenses if you are
displaced)
5. Like many other places, having a good credit report helps here. Most home insurance
companies provide better rates for people who have better credit histories.
6. Combined coverages are sometimes cheaper, so make sure to ask for them.
