Recession tips: Staying employed during recession

Are you one of the many people who are afraid to be a victim of current economic
recession? There are ways to secure your position within the company even if your
company is downsizing or laying off people during the recession.  In some cases recession
can even work for the benefits of some employees’ careers. Here are a few recession tips
to consider for your employment:

  • Get involved: Playing safe may not always be the best option during the recession.
This is the time to take initiatives, get noticed, and receive credits for contributions.
You can start, for instance, by volunteering yourself for a new project by expressing
your interest and skills in it. Show how you can contribute to a new project. Give
ideas about starting the project and how you can be helpful.  Given the ongoing
recession, keep in mind that it is not wise to start volunteering by saying that you
have nothing on your schedule. Instead, express interest and volunteer your time and
skills in exchange for gaining experience and an opportunity to learn.

  • Market yourself:  Given the ongoing recession, it's important to try to be part of
the team and sell yourself as a valuable player. Companies rarely get rid of a profit-
contributing employees. Try to bring new ideas to the table. The goal is to be an
    indispensable employee for your company.

  • Expand your network: Networking is of course always important. But given the
current recession, it can make the difference between remaining employed and not.
Start by reconnecting with your established connection and then extend beyond it.
Knowing people in different industries can open new opportunities.

  • Be available:  Show that you are always interested in new projects and can be
available. Recession is not the time to say you are busy and isolate yourself from
important revenue-brining projects. Try to find time in your schedule. If you are
involved in projects, there is less chance of layoff simply because the company
    needs you.

  • Take advantage of the current situation: It is no secret that layoffs are rampant
in the current recession and the employees that are lucky to keep their jobs often
have to carry out the work departed employees used to do. If you are still employed,
you should actively try to seek out and carry out these duties. Not only it will make
you stand out before your employer, but taking on new challenges can provide a
great learning opportunity, which will be of tremendous value once the economy
    begins recovering.
