Taxes in recession:

Recession or not, many people hire professionals to do their taxes, and indeed in some
cases hiring professionals may make sense. But if you do not fall in a complicated tax
category and are not planning to make complex deductions, you can save some money in
this recession by doing it yourself.  Filing taxes for many of us is often easier than we think.

Here are several advantages in doing your taxes yourself:

  • Save money: Tax softwares like Turbo tax, H&R Block, and others have made it
easy for anyone to file taxes. They are usually straightforward, proceeding step by
step through questions as the software calculates your taxes for you. They are often
easy to work with and save you a lot of money, which is important especially
    considering the current recession.

  • Knowledge and awareness: Filing yourself allows you to gain knowledge that
carries on from year to year. Not only you become more comfortable with filing
taxes, but you also become more aware of your options (i.e., deductions, savings,
etc) during the year, which can save you a lot of money over time and is particularly
    relevant now given the recession.

Here are several tips for your future tax filing:

  • Keep your expenses organized:  Whether you are self-employed, employee, or an
employer, it is wise to keep your expenses organized throughout the year. It will
make the deductions easier, which is important especially considering the current
    recession.

  • Self-employed vs. Employee: If you are an employee, your tax filing is usually
very straightforward.  It does not require much knowledge about tax returns since
your deductions are usually clear. But if you are an employer or self-employed, filing
taxes can get more complicated and as such you may want to consider hiring
    professionals.

  • Check various online sources: Reading on taxes in various online sites can be very
helpful. And while, as always, you need to do your own research and/or discuss
with professionals, you can always save yourself a lot of money and time by gaining
    knowledge online.

  • Learn about deductions: There is little doubt that knowing about tax deductibles
can save you a lot of money over the years. You don’t have to be a business owner
or self-employed to take advantage of deductibles. And while the list of deductibles
and the requirements for each may change year by year, much of it stays the same.
Spending a few hours online and learning about deductibles is a sure way of saving
yourself some real cash over time which is particularly relevant given the current
recession. For example, if you work from home, the rooms used exclusively for
your work are generally legitimate deductions. In other words, you can deduct costs
for the area of your home used exclusively and regularly for your business and not
shared with any other business, even if it’s a very small area.

  • IRS website: The IRS website has become better and easier to use over the recent
years. An increasing number of tax payers use the site to file their taxes. Filing taxes
online with IRS is also a great way to receive your tax refund more quickly. Not
everyone qualifies to use the website however, so before making any plans, it makes
sense to check to see if you qualify.
