When is the time to start looking for a new position?
Are you wondering if you will be next on the list for layoffs? It is not easy for any one to
be in the position of uncertainty wondering if you are losing time by not starting new job
search. And yet many of us are in this position given the ongoing recession. If you are
wondering about your job security and not sure if it is a time to start applying for another
position, there are signs to look for and prepare yourself for a smoother transition. Here are
a few suggestions:
1. Know your industry: Be aware of what is going on in the industry you are working in?
Do you hear a lot of good or bad news in the media? Do people talk about particular
industry? There are always signs of growth, pick, and downturn. The difficult part is to
spot up or down swings at the right time. Looking back, for example, the signs of coming
housing downturn were everywhere in late 2006 and 2007, but even experts did not begin
acting on that knowledge until it was a little. Those who got out early were those who
stayed up and informed about the industry.
2. Your position and responsibility at a company: Be realistic about your position and
your contributions at a company. Are you a valuable employee? Are you contributing more
than others? Do people ask your opinion? How indispensable are you to the long-term
projects in your company. If you are not, then your position may be at risk.
3. Know where your company is heading: Pay attention to company news and rumors.
Keep up with the direction the company is heading. Use that knowledge to better integrate
yourself to the broader goals of the company. Rumors about expansion and growth are
usually good for your job security, whereas mergers and acquisitions news may be so
good.
4. The position of your competitors: It is always good to be informed about the situation
with the competitors. Are they expanding? Are they cutting down their workforce? If they
are public companies, have you checked their stocks recently? Knowledge of what’s
happening with the competitors can provide a broad knowledge about the industry as well
as your own company.
